IHEU supports three Humanist schools in Uganda. Thanks to the support of Humanist around the world, and the dedicated work of Humanists in Uganda, these schools provide secondary education to more than 300 children, including many orphans and others from deprived backgrounds.

Every three years the Humanist world comes together in one place for the World Humanist Congress. Humanist activists from dozens of countries share experiences and discuss Humanist policy; they educate each other and learn new methods for organization and outreach; they are inspired by the stories and plans of Humanists from all over the world; and they form friendships that last through the decades. At the end of the congress they go back to their countries with the training, support and inspiration to grow their groups and change their societies.

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) brings together more than 100 Humanist organizations from 40 countries, and is working with new groups in more than a dozen additional countries. The work of starting and developing Humanist groups is supported by the IHEU Growth and Development Fund.

As the world union of Humanist, rationalist, secular, ethical culture, atheist and freethought organizations, IHEU represents the Humanist movement at international forums. IHEU maintains delegations to the United Nations (UN) in New York and Geneva, UNESCO in Paris, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in the Gambia.

This article is difficult to write, more difficult still to bring before a large audience. But I need the input from an intelligent audience able to look both ways regarding the value of religion, and this organization must surely have the requisite audience. I therefore ask your indulgence to survey theoretical work developed over a thirty year period and make your comments freely available, with my sincere thanks in advance.

1 Introduction

In this paper I shall look at the communitarians’ accounts of human rights in Africa as conceived by scholars writing on the African experience. I shall explore their understanding of the notion of equality, and their ideas on human rights in terms of a proclaimed African communitarian ethos and proceed with a critique of these notions. I argue that despite many African thinkers’ insistence that African communitarianism does encapsulate a respect for the individual’s rights, dignity and liberties, communitarianism (whether it be extreme or moderate) does not enfold a paradigm of individual human rights-claims, but instead embraces an authoritarian and sexist paradigm.
