UK Government agrees to not fund creationist schools
Submitted by Matt on 13 January, 2012 - 15:19The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the British government’s decision to not fund schools that teach creationism or are run by creationist groups. The Department of Education issued a new revision of the model funding agreement for Free Schools in order to preclude "the teaching, as an evidence-based view or theory, of any view or theory that is contrary to established scientific and/or historical evidence and explanations" The change follows the BHA coordinating the ‘Teach evolution, not creationism!’ campaign, which called for this precise change.

Swiss dubbed ‘school yard bullies’ for firing non-religious teacher
Submitted by Matt on 13 October, 2010 - 15:02The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) has accused Swiss authorities of behaving like “school yard bullies” towards a state school teacher who removed the crucifix from his classroom. Valentin Abgottspon was dismissed from his job as a middle-school teacher in the Swiss canton of Valais on Friday, 8 October. The dismissal came after the teacher raised concerns about the promotion of Christianity by state schools.
British Humanists contribute to documentary against faith schools

Andrew Copson, vice president of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and chief executive officer of the British Humanist Association (BHA), is among a number of experts interviewed for ‘Faith School Menace?’. The show will premiere this Wednesday, 18 August, at 9pm on the UK channel More4.
UK Government says Atheists can run publicly-funded schools, but not "extremist groups"

The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP, was speaking yesterday, July 28, about government plans to encourage "Free Schools"—schools that are funded by the government but run by non-governmental organizations, such as religious groups, universities, businesses, or groups of parents. Catholics take credit for UK backtrack on Sex Education

Free evolution DVDs for British schools
Submitted by admin on 21 August, 2009 - 10:46Every school in England and Wales is to receive a free DVD of “Growing Up in the Universe”, Professor Richard Dawkins’s 1991 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for children. The DVD is being distributed by the British Humanist Association with funding from the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. To accompany the DVDs, three free lesson plans, “What is Science for?”, “Isn’t Evolution Improbable?” and “Design your own Organisms!” have been developed for teachers. See www.humanistgrid.net/guu
Humanists award Richard Dawkins for promoting reason and science across the world

The award is being given by the British Humanist Association (BHA) and the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) following a conference during the day on ‘Darwin, Humanism and Science’, at which Professor Dawkins is a key speaker.
