Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva today (12 September 2011), IHEU representative Hannah Bock called on religious leaders around the world to make it clear "again and again and again that no religion justifies the taking of innocent life.  It is the great tragedy of our time that, worldwide, we are confronted by those who believe it is".

The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) has joined an appeal to the UN to help the situation of Christians in Iraq. The Christmas Day appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, drew her attention to acts of terror against Christians in Iraq that include the bombing of 59 churches and the killings of bishops, priests and other Christians. These acts of terror, combined with kidnappings, death threats, and anti-Christian social discrimination, have prompted nearly half of Iraq's one million Christians to flee the country.

On Human Rights Day, 10 December 2008, in collaboration with two other NGOs, IHEU issued an urgent appeal to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay on behalf of Iraq's rapidly disappearing Christian population.

On September 19th 2003, just a few months after the American invasion, the first post-war secular organisation was launched in Iraq.
