IHEU pleads for equality for all under the law
Submitted by Matt on 7 October, 2011 - 23:00According to the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, European policies of multiculturalism have “utterly failed”. Certainly, when intolerance and discrimination are allowed to thrive in the name of multiculturalism, something has gone seriously wrong. According to IHEU representative Roy Brown, speaking in reply to the presentation of a report to the Human Rights Council on contemporary forms of racism, turning a blind eye to the oppression of women in Europe’s minority communities is itself a form of racism.
Victory in sight on defamation of religion?
Submitted by Matt on 22 March, 2011 - 15:10In what looks like a major climb down on the part of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) this grouping of the 57 Islamic states in the UN has tabled a draft resolution at the Human Rights Council: “Combating intolerance …and violence based on religion or belief”.
UN must address corruption and human rights abuses
Submitted by Matt on 4 March, 2011 - 17:16Today at the United Nations, IHEU focused attention on the connection between corruption and human rights abuses. In a statement to the 16th session of the UN Human Right Council (HRC) in Geneva, IHEU representative Roy Brown highlighted the “insidious plague” of corruption worldwide and suggested the Council form a working group to address the problem.
A rare victory for Human Rights
Submitted by Matt on 25 February, 2011 - 18:17On 25 February 2011, at a hastily called special session, the United Nations Human Rights Council unanimously adopted a resolution to seek the suspension on Libya from membership of the Council and to send a team to Libya to investigate and report back on the human rights situation in that vast and unhappy country where the government of Muammar Gaddafi has been using military force against his own unarmed civilian population, killing hundreds.

Where are we now in Europe?
IHEU condemns UK, Ireland and Pakistan over Freedom of Expression
Submitted by Matt on 8 June, 2010 - 13:52In a speech condemning the recent passage of a blasphemy law in Ireland, and UK legislation which criminalises, among other things, causing "religiously aggravated distress", Roy Brown, IHEU Main Representative at the UN Geneva, asked the Human Rights Council whether these two governments have forgotten that it is individuals not ideas or beliefs that merit protection. He also criticized the way in which, at the other extreme, Pakistan permits expression of hatred in the media against Ahmadiyyas and other religious minorities to go unchecked.
Christmas Appeal for Iraq's Christians
Submitted by Matt on 1 January, 2010 - 21:00The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) has joined an appeal to the UN to help the situation of Christians in Iraq. The Christmas Day appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, drew her attention to acts of terror against Christians in Iraq that include the bombing of 59 churches and the killings of bishops, priests and other Christians. These acts of terror, combined with kidnappings, death threats, and anti-Christian social discrimination, have prompted nearly half of Iraq's one million Christians to flee the country.
The WIN project – five years on
Submitted by admin on 23 April, 2007 - 14:08“Women must be seen as the agents of change rather than the objects of change” Amartya Sen.
When I first met the late Dr Indumati Parikh in January 1999 while attending the 14th World Humanist Congress in Mumbai, I could not believe that here was a woman who for 35 years had been putting into practice what was only then coming to be recognised by the international development community as the leading development paradigm: integrated health care, education, and women’s empowerment. The women’s self-help organisation that Dr Parikh founded, Streehitakarini, is still going strong.
