ON DR. YUNIS SHAIKH'S DEATH SENTENCE FOR BLASPHEMY

Concerning the death sentence for an offence of blasphemy against Dr Yunis Shaikh and, more generally, the increase of attacks against fundamental rights in that country, Marco Pannella, member of the European Parliament (Radicali Italiani) has deposited to-day a written prioriy question to the
Commission.

By Marco Pannella On the death sentence for Dr Yunis Shaikh in Pakistan

On 18 august 2001 Dr. Yunis Shaikh has been imprisoned in Adiala jail and sentenced to death for blasphemy by Pakistani judges. He is convicted for blasphemy, having said that Muhammed and his family could not have been Muslims before the Prophet was inspired and similar other opinions, considered "offensive" by Pakistani clergy.

The trial has been carried on while a mob conjured by members of the clergy shouted, while witnesses were called to court who had declared not to have been present at the time when Dr. Shaikh allegedly pronounced the sentences for which he is convicted. He was given only one week
to appeal to the Supreme Court, instead of the usual thirty days. Even if until  now nobody has been hanged for blasphemy in that country, hundreds of citizens, accused or condemned for blasphemy languish in Pakistani jails, closed in the so called "death cells", where they can barely stand.
Has the Commission, with the presence of a representative, attended the trial to Dr. Yunis Shaikh ?
Has the Commission promptly reacted to the death sentence delivered against Dr  Yunis Shaikh? More generally, which initiatives were have been undertaken to or will be undertaken by the Commision against the increase, in Pakistan, of blasphemy convictions and more generally of attacks against fundamental human rights?

Bruxelles, 28 Agosto 2001. In merito alla condanna a morte per reato di blasfemia emessa in Pakistan contro il Dr Yunis Shaikh e, più in generale, al moltiplicarsi di attentati contro I diritti fondamentali in questo Paese, Marco Pannella, deputato europeo (Radicali Italiani) ha depositato
quest'oggi un'interrogazione scritta prioritaria alla Commissione.

Sulla condanna a morte del Dr Yunis Shaikh in Pakistan Il 18 agosto 2001 il Dr. Yunis Shaikh è stato incarcerato nella prigione di Adiala e condannato a morte per blasfemia dalla giustizia pakistana. E' accusato di blasfemia, per aver detto che Maometto e la sua famiglia non potevano essere già
musulmani prima che il Profeta avesse l'illuminazione e simili altre opinioni, considerate "offensive" dal clero pakistano. Il processo è stato portato avanti tra le urla di una folla attizzata dai rappresentanti del clero, mentre venivano fatti sfilare testimoni che pure avevano dichiarato di non essere stati presentimentre il dottor Shaykh pronunciava le frasi incriminate. Gli è stata concessa  una settimana per appellarsi alla Corte Suprema, invece dei soliti trenta giorni. Anche se fino ad oggi nessuno in quel paese è stato impiccato per blasfemia, vi sono centinaia di cittadini accusati o condannati per blasfemia che languono nelle carceri pakistane, rinchiusi nelle cosiddette "celle della morte" dove non riescono quasi a stare in piedi.

Ha la Commissione, con la presenza di un proprio rappresentante, seguito il processo al Dr. Yunis Shaikh ? Ha la Commissione reagito ufficialmente alla condanna a morte emessa nei confronti del Dr Yunis Shaikh ? Più generalmente quali iniziative ha preso o intende prendere la Commissione rispetto al moltiplicarsi in Pakistan di condanne per blasfemia e, più in generale, di attentati ai diritti fondamentali della persona?
