This fifth Congress of the International Humanist & Ethical Union congratulates the UN on its 25th Anniversary and notes with respect and appreciation, the fact that, in spite of their different economic, political and social systems, the 126 nations have often reached a consensus on matters of importance to the world community.

Congress honours as a milestone on the road to a real international community, the Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Treaty on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. We welcome the achievement of the Treaties on Antarctica, Outer Space and the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

We endorse the aim of the Secretary General to make the 1970's the Decade of Development, De-colonisation and Disarmament.

The IHEU will continue to assist the UN and its family of organisations in implementing the aims so well stated in the Preamble to the Charter:

"to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war; to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small;

to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained; and to promote social progress and better standards in the larger freedom".
