The responsibility of humanists for nature and the environment

The conditions in the biosphere, with its extremely thin skin around the Earth, have changed in geological times, allowing different forms of life and exterminating some of these forms is later periods.

Humans must avoid being themselves the cause of alterations in conditions in the biosphere that will make present forms of life impossible.

Humanists accept the full responsibility for their own life style and the influence they have on their environment, including fellow humans and other forms of life, now and for the future.

Referring to the IHEU statements of 1972 on Population and of 1982 on World-wide Birth Control.

Referring to the 1991 declaration of the Humanist Study Centre Nederland (HSN) on Growth and Equilibrium,

The IHEU Congress therefore declares that humanists will:

1. Accept the challenge to bend the current development into a direction of sustainable life;

2. Accept that stabilisation of the world population must be reached as soon as possible, this means promoting:

a. Knowledge and availability to all of effective and safe methods for birth control - and abortion if necessary:

b. Empowerment of women;

c. Acceptance by men of their responsibility in family planning;

d. Good health care for all;

e. Sexual education starting in primary schools
