In these times where credulity is touted as a virtue, the need to develop the capacity to make critical judgements on what we hear and read is evermore urgent. It is high time to react against the pollution of our minds by the "politically correct", by "conventional wisdom" and by the so called "journalistic objectivity" conveyed by the media whose world vision is becoming more and more homogenous due to their corporate concentration.
The development of the capacity of all individuals to formulate autonomous judgements correctly, that's humanism in action. Humanism in action leads to the capacity to resist the intellectual manipulations that make it possible to erect power structures based either on "revelations" in the case of religions or on false premises in the case of certain pseudo-democratic regimes.
Humanist values are threatened in the United States where right wing fundamentalists are gaining ground. We in Quebec see their influence crossing the border into western Canada and feel we must get organised to resist them here. We believe that the defence of the rights of non-believers and the promotion of humanist values require meeting the broader objective of developing critical thinking in our society.
The Humanist Foundation of Quebec was launched in December 2004 to gather funds to assist a wide range of organizations which favour, directly or indirectly, the development of critical thinking and the promotion of humanist values in our society.
That initiative was followed by the creation of the Humanist Association of Quebec and the Humanist Publications of Quebec in July 2005.
In Montreal today, Les Sceptiques du Quebec strive for the development of critical thinking with respect to paranormal phenomena, the Movement Laique Quebécois keeps a watchful eye on the separation of church and state and Info-cult informs on the dangers of manipulation by sects. These three organisations are doing an excellent job in the niche each has chosen and they deserve support.
The astonishing advances of science and techology of the last two centuries have creared a completely new environment in which what is right and what is wrong need to be redefined. The time has come to discard the ancient hebraic, christian and islamic morals that still drag along historical prescriptions that have no rational basis and that are now often harmful to humanity.
To acheive this, we must mobilise the largest possible number of people willing to participate in the formulation of new humanist ethics that will correspond to the needs and realities of today's rapidly evolving society.
That is what the Humanist Association of Québec seeks to acomplish by organising several work groups or comitees funded by the Humanist Foundation of Québec.
If the goal of live and evolving humanist ethics is meaningful to you, you are invited to join one of the first work groups that are now looking at education, bioethics, euthanasia and humanist ceremonies in Québec. You are also invited to propose and lead as many new comitees as possible, provided they are compatible with the humanist ideal. The task is huge and there is room for all of good will. A notre époque o๠la crédulité est présentée comme une vertu, l'objectif de développer la capacité de porter des jugements critiques sur ce qu'on nous raconte devient de plus en plus pressant. Il est grand temps de réagir contre l'envahissement des esprits par le "politiquement correct", par la "sagesse conventionnelle" et par "l'objectivité journalistique" véhiculés par les médias dont la vision du monde devient de plus en plus homogène suite à leur concentration corporative.
Le développement de la capacité de tous les individus de porter des jugements autonomes correctement, à§a c'est l'humanisme en action. L'humanisme en action conduit à la capacité de résister aux manipulations intellectuelles qui rendent possible l'érection de structures de pouvoir basées soit sur des "révélations" dans le cas des religions ou sur de fausses prémisses dans le cas de certains régimes pseudo-démocratiques.
Les valeurs humanistes sont menacées aux États Unis o๠la droite fondamentaliste gagne du terrain. Nous, au Quèbec, voyons leur influence traverser la frontière dans l`ouest Canadien et sentons que nous devons nous organiser pour leur faire face ici. Nous sommes d`avis que la défense des droits des non-croyants et la promotion des valeurs humanistes passent par l'objectif plus large du développement de la pensée critique dans notre société.
La Fondation humaniste du Québec a été mise en place en décembre
2004 pour recueillir des fonds pour appuyer un large éventail d'organismes qui favorisent directement ou indirectement le développement de la pensée critique et la diffusion des valeurs humanistes dans notre société. Cette initiative fut suivie par la création de l'Association humaniste du Québec et des Editions humanistes du Québec en juillet 2005.
À Montréal aujourd'hui, Les Sceptiques du Québec militent pour le développement de la pensée critique face aux phénomènes paranormaux, le Mouvement laïque québécois veille au maintien de la séparation entre l'Église et l'État et Info-secte renseigne sur les périls de la manipulation par des sectes. Ces trois organisations font un excellent travail dans la niche que chacune a choisi et elles méritent d'àªtre appuyées.
Les progrès fulgurants de la science et des technologies des deux derniers siècles ont crée un environnement complètement nouveau dans lequel ce qui est bien et ce qui est mal doit àªtre redéfini.
Le temps est venu de laisser de cà´té les anciennes morales hébraiques, chretiennes et islamiques qui trainent encore des prescriptions historiques qui n'ont aucun fondement rationnel et qui, maintenant, sont souvent nuisibles a l'humanite.
Pour réussir cela, il faut mobiliser le plus grand nombre de possible de personnes désireuses de participer à l'élaboration d'une éthique humaniste nouvelle qui correspondra aux besoins et aux réalitées de la société d`aujourd`hui en rapide évolution.
C'est ce que cherche a accomplir l'Assocation humaniste du Québec en organisant plusieurs groupes de travail ou comités parrainnés par la Fondation humaniste du Québec.
Si l'objectif d'une éthique humaniste vivante et évolutive vous rejoint, vous àªtes invités à vous joindre à un des premiers groupes de travail qui se penchent maintenant sur l'éducation, la bioéthique, l'euthanasie et les cérémonies humanistes au Québec.
