Separation and the media: how to use the media and not be used by them?
Submitted by admin on 6 July, 2005 - 15:15
Chair: Terry Sanderson
6 July 2005
This was a "hands-on" session, with no formal structure. People were encouraged to share their own experiences and tips. Terry Sanderson started by giving a brief idea of what constitutes a "story" in journalistic terms and then we discussed how best to get this into the papers or onto the broadcast media. Some people in the session already had considerable experience of dealing with local media and they shared their thoughts and what had been successful for them.
The most important opinion to emerge from this session is that we need to be more professional about our approach to the media and to take the whole thing more seriously. If our work goes unnoticed and our philosophy unreported, then we are speaking only to ourselves. We need to push outwards with the message and that means using the mass media to disseminate it.
