Objects and purpose
- Secularism affirms that this life is the only one of which we have any knowledge
- Secularism affirms that progress is possible only on the basis of equal freedom of speech and publication; that the free criticism of institutions and ideas is essential to a civilised State.
- Secularism aims at promoting the happiness and well-being of mankind; morality is social in origin and application
- Secularism demands the complete separation of Church and State and the abolition of all privileges granted to religious organisations.
Nature of operations
- Lobbies Parliaments and Governments of UK and EU to protect rights of non-religious and for elimination of religious privilege and to counter excessive religious influence.
- Contributes to broadcasts (own studio) and films, gives evidence to Royal Commissions and Select Committees, provides lecturers and chairs for conferences, both national and international.
- Particular areas of interest: Human Rights, (especially freedom of expression), Education, Administration of Justice, Religious involvement in Parliaments (including EU) and UN.
- Produces weekly newsletter called Newsline available from www.secularism.org.uk Is actively involved in European and international secular, freethought and humanist groups
