Humanist Society of Scotland
The Humanist Society of Scotland (HSS) seeks to represent those who adopt a non-religious, but ethical life stance based on enlightened self-interest. It aims to build a better human world without reliance on supernatural forces.
The Society is active in many fields. At present, its main efforts are in campaigning for secular schooling and a secular Scottish State, and in the development of its increasingly popular range of Humanist Rites of Passage, particularly weddings (now legal in Scotland) and funerals. Please visit the Ceremonies pages for more information and contact details of our Celebrants.
The HSS is a registered charity, run by a Board of Trustees elected from among its membership and supported by six sub-committees; Education, Ceremonies, Membership Services, Media & Publications, Community Humanism and Public Affairs. In April 2008, the award-winning novelist Christopher Brookmyre was elected the society's first President.
Membership of the HSS is available online, by post or through one of the Groups in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Highland, Perth and Dundee who hold regular meetings on Humanist issues. All members receive our quarterly magazine Humanitie, and other benefits. Non-members are warmly welcomed at the Group meetings. If you would like more information on their meetings, please visit the Local Groups page of the web site.
