Humanitas is a member-based organization for social services and community-development. It consists of some 16,000 members and approximately 10,000 volunteers, functioning in over 80 local and regional branches.

Humanitas provides specific assistance to people to help themselves independently. Every human being is responsible for own life and decisions. However, peoples share a responsibility towards each other on the base of equality, respect and individual choices. These are the basic factors of the NGO, Humanitas.

Humanitas continuously strives for innovation by having accessible spectre of activities. Our local branches are autonomous in selecting their projects. This selection depends totally on local circumstances, requirements and personal choices by the volunteers working in the branches.

Our activities include many different forms of small scale services, social work in addition to professional help as well as serving many local agencies such as residences for elderly people.

Accordingly, Humanitas can provide local services for elderly in organizing social contacts, (prevention programmes to avoid loneliness by diverting their minds in some other things). Prevention programmes for children in disrupted families, intervention programmes for people in financial problems to sort it out firmly. Transsexuals and their relatives can get counselling in the process of gender transformation. There are many other specific projects, which covers the needs of the people in social and psychological aspects.

In certain areas Humanitas has appointed professionals who provides training and counselling for all her volunteers. Special trainings are organized for those volunteers who are working in Nursing Homes, Hospices, Home Start, ( a project which provides all sort of domestic help to solve educational problems).

Members of the NGO Humanitas pay a moderate annual contribution. It receives financial support from National, Provincial and Local authorities. More over Humanitas receives funds from Legacies and the "Sponsor bingo", a Dutch lottery.
