The EHF-FHE was created in Prague, in July 1991. It is an international association under Belgian law. Its members are humanist associations having a legal personality in a European country. It federates numerous associations, a number of which from East European countries. It is administered by a board, the members of which are elected for a period of three years by the general assembly constituted by the member organisations.
Main statutory objectives of EHF-FHE
* to carry out educational, scientific and cultural action in order to promote a humanist vision of cultural, social and ethical values in Europe;
* to promote, primarily in Europe, the place of voluntary organisations developing the same objectives;
* to represent its member organisations to the European institutions;
* to promote exchanges among its members and the circulation of information and experience which shall contribute to the development of humanist values in Europe as well as to social and cultural progress.

International conferences, partially financed by the European Commission, are organised in close collaboration with members of the federation on various topics
