An organisation that promotes Humanist philosophy and ideals. It has branches throughout New Zealand.
The NZ Humanist Society is active locally and nationally. It holds formal meetings and social events, co-ordinates projects, organises seminars, publishes a magazine - and lots more.
Aims
1 To promote a Humanist approach to personal living and society in New Zealand.
2 To facilitate Humanist fellowship, communication, and action in New Zealand.
(The five points embodied in the Inaugural Declaration of the International Humanist and Ethical Union Appendix "A", and the seven points embodied in the Amsterdam Declaration 2002 constitute typical descriptions of Humanism acceptable for the purposes of the Humanist Society of New Zealand Constitution.)
Main activities
Supports Human Rights and the rights of non religious people; lobbies Parliament and Government agencies; holds monthly meetings on subjects of interest to Humanists; holds an annual seminar to promote Humanism; publishes a magazine, a newsletter, pamphlets, and email news bulletins; maintains a website; operates a web based discussion group; broadcasts regularly on the radio; maintains a library; maintains a list of Humanist marriage celebrants; and holds social functions to facilitate Humanist fellowship.
Publishes New Zealand Humanist & Humanist Newsletter (10 issues per year). Broadcasts Humanist Outlook on Access Radio.
Prepares submissions and lobbies parliament.
Affiliated to the United Nations Association (New Zealand).
