Judge Tosti cleared!

Success (gold star) Italy

In a ruling dated February 17, 2009, the Court of Cassation (Supreme Court) in Rome has acquitted Judge Tosti of all charges. Judge Tosti had been sentenced to seven months in prison for refusing to hold court under a crucifix.

This ruling is a great victory for all secularists, in particular the Giordano Free Thought Federation.

The French Libre Pensee (National Federation of Freethought) welcomes this victory, which was notable for the extent of international mobilisation. This success will long be remembered as an imporatnt step in the struggle for the separation of religions and state.

We are grateful to our friends at ILCAF for their help in translating this report.

It would be of much interest, particularly but not exclusively to those with a legal background, to be able to read a translation into English of the complete judgment of the Court of Cassation in Rome.
