IHEU representative attacked
Submitted by admin on 30 July, 2009 - 16:24
We are receiving reports that Leo Igwe, IHEU's representative in West Africa, has been attacked in Calabar, Nigeria at the venue of a symposium on Witchraft and Chidrights. According to an eyewitness, about two hundred members of Liberty Gospel Church stormed the venue and attacked Leo, taking away his bag, camera and mobile phone and destroying his glasses in a determined attack lasting for nearly an hour. Video available
Liberty Gospel Church led by Helen Akpabio has been at the center of allegations of murdering multiple children, supposedy suspected to be witches.
A team of police took some time to dislodge the mob and restore peace at the conference venue.
We understand that Leo is safe, and he has spoken to an IHEU contact from a public phone. The symposium went ahead as planned despite the disruption.
