A 'Freethought Week' was first proposed by Freedom From Religion Foundation member David Schreiber to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the end of the witch trials in 1992.

This action came in the wake of the United Nations Year for Tolerance, 1995, proclaimed by the Assembly in 1993 (resolution 48/126).
