International Humanists protest Indonesia blasphemy arrest
Submitted by Matt on 26 January, 2012 - 14:25The International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) is calling for the Indonesian government to guarantee the freedom and safety of Alexander Aan, an Indonesian arrested for blasphemy. IHEU -- the global union of more than 100 Humanist and atheist groups from 40 countries including Indonesia -- has also raised Aan’s case with the United Nations. Aan was arrested for blasphemy last week in Dharmasraya, in the province of West Sumatra.
Humanists condemn Ugandan Parliament’s threat to kill Gays
Submitted by Matt on 11 May, 2011 - 14:30The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has condemned plans by members of the Ugandan Parliament to fast track legislation that would mandate execution for a wide range of consensual gay relationships. GALHA, an IHEU member organization based in the UK, has joined demands by the international community that Uganda's President Museveni veto the "Kill The Gays" bill, should it be passed in Parliament.
New poll shows UK Census will undercount the non-religious
Submitted by Matt on 2 March, 2011 - 15:51Two thirds of adults living in Scotland are not religious—but the 2011 Census question won't show that, says the Humanist Society of Scotland (HSS). A scientific survey commissioned by HSS demonstrates that the way the census asks about religion greatly exaggerates the number of religious adherents in Scotland. Whereas 58% of Scots say they are religious when asked the census question, just 35% of Scots reply “yes” to the question “are you religious?”
